Tough question and there are a wide range of answers.
Answer 1 is “yes” – According to a study the traction industry had done in 1997, traction studs help you to brake up to 50% faster in hard pack and/or ice. They are also a must if you ride the hilly, icy terrain in the Northeast US and Ontario.
Answer 2 is “it’s up to you” – Today’s tracks are very aggressive and many riders in the Trail/Touring category prefer to ride without studs. If they feel safe enough, and their sled handles the way they like it, then that’s their decision.
